How Do We Talk About the Future in English?
English has several ways to talk about the future. For B1 learners, two very common and important ways are using the Present Continuous and the structure be going to.
Both forms help us express what will happen, but they carry different shades of meaning. Understanding these differences will make your English sound more natural.

When to Use Present Continuous for the Future?
We use the Present Continuous to talk about future arrangements. These are plans that are already fixed, often with other people, and usually involve a specific time and place.
- You have made a definite plan.
- You have agreed with someone or bought tickets.
- It feels like a scheduled event.
When using the Present Continuous for the future, we often include a time expression to make it clear we are talking about the future, not the present moment.
- I'm flying to London next week. (Tickets are booked.)
- They're having dinner with us on Saturday. (An invitation has been accepted.)
- She's starting her new job on Monday. (The start date is confirmed.)
When to Use 'Going To' for the Future?
Wir verwenden be going to to talk about future plans or intentions. These are decisions you have made, but the arrangements might not be fully complete yet.
- You have decided to do something.
- It expresses your intention or what you plan to do.
- The focus is on the decision, not the fixed schedule.
Be going to is also used to make predictions based on present evidence. However, for this lesson, we focus on plans.
- I'm going to study harder for my next exam. (A personal decision.)
- We're going to buy a new car soon. (A plan, but maybe not chosen or purchased yet.)
- He's going to visit his family in the summer. (An intention, but specific dates might not be fixed.)
Can I Use Both? Similarities and Differences
Sometimes, both Present Continuous und be going to can be used for future plans, especially when the plan is quite firm but not yet a fully fixed arrangement.
- I'm taking an English exam next year. (Implies it's arranged or very firm.)
- I'm going to take an English exam next year. (Implies it's a strong intention.)
The key difference is the level of certainty and arrangement:
- Present Continuous: More formal, fixed arrangements, often with others, like a calendar entry.
- Be going to: Personal plans, intentions, decisions, less about specific arrangements.
Remember, if you use Present Continuous for the future, it's very common to include a time reference (e.g., tomorrow, next week). With be going to, a time reference is not always necessary.
How to Form 'Going To'?
The structure for be going to is simple: verb 'to be' (am/is/are) + going to + base form of the verb (infinitive).

Spanish speakers sometimes confuse these forms because Spanish often uses one main future tense. In English, it's important to choose the right form to convey the exact meaning.
- Fehler: Using going to for a very fixed arrangement.
Falsch: I am going to meet my doctor at 3 PM tomorrow.
Richtig: I am meeting my doctor at 3 PM tomorrow. (This is a fixed appointment.) - Fehler: Using Present Continuous for a general intention without a clear arrangement.
Falsch: I am learning a new skill next year. (If it's just a decision, not yet arranged.)
Richtig: I am going to learn a new skill next year. (This emphasizes the intention.)
The key is to think about how definite and arranged the future event is.
